A Time to Help Those Less Fortunate

As public safety personnel we often meet folks at the most difficult times of their lives. We have contact with families living on the margins of our community.   We see those in difficulty up close and personal.  As a result we believe in doing what we can to help out.

On Saturday, we had a shopping trip for needy families thanks to our Meijer store on Brown Road and Store Director, Tom Abney.  Our trip is a partnership between Avondale Youth Assistance, the Morning Optimist Club of Auburn Hills and the Auburn Hills police officers.  We take about 15 kids on a shopping trip to buy gifts for their families for Christmas.  It give you pause when a 10 year old is thrilled to buy their dad a winter coat because he works outside and the child says that the coat he has now has a broken zipper.  It is a crazy scene with wrapping paper and ribbon flying everywhere with lots of smiles going out the door with those brightly colored packages.

The firefighters also have Helping Hands, and organization that helps families in need.  At Christmas time they also adopt a group of children who are without families and are wards of the state.  I listened to the one of the firefighters speak the other morning about these kids in particular.  He said that they aren’t looking for toys, they want basic items like socks, hair brushes and personal toiletries.  One of the biggest benefactors of Helping Hands is Continental AG, one of our corporations.

We do what we can to help out in our community.  If you would like to help us help others, you can donate to the Helping Hands fund by contacting the Fire Department M-F 8-5 at 248-370-9461 or join the Morning Optimist Club at their meeting on Thursday mornings at 7:30 am at the Boys and Girls Club in Auburn Hills.  Or you can always reach me.
