It is back to school time again. I remember that it was an exciting time, looking forward to the start of a whole new adventure–but maybe not so much for every child when their family can’t afford back to school clothing and supplies. I happen to think that having a new pair of shoes or a new backpack puts a new shine on an important time of year and I am not alone. If kids look forward to going to school our whole society will be a lot better off. So here in Auburn Hills a great group of people are doing what they can to make that happen.
Our Morning Optimist Club of Auburn Hills (“Friend of Youth”), Avondale Youth Assistance and Meijer helped 14 kids get something new for school last Wednesday evening Thanks to Colleen Sieh, Mike Kazyak and Kay Sendegas over at Youth Assistance and Steve and Barb Sucher, Bill and Gail Barr, Tina Spurlin, Ramiro Garcia and Ed Salter ( I know I’ve missed someone–sorry) from the Optimists we made that happen.
You would have been thrilled to see the new backpacks loaded with shoes, 3 ring binders, new jeans, shirts and even socks and underwear going out the door with these kids. One even found a winter coat to fit into his budget!
Thanks to Deb Atkins, the Store Director at Meijer too for helping us out and the City of Auburn Hills, Karen Adcock and Mrs. Marsh for the bus trip. These are the people who make this a great community.
Here are some photos from our trip.
