Reversing A Trend

Beginning a new year is a time to make a new start. I have quite a few resolutions. They are probably pretty similar to yours.

One trend I am praying will change is the dramatic increase in police officer fatalities that occurred in 2010 and 2009. The FBI is telling us that violent crime is staying down across the country except this one trend:  Firearms related deaths of police are up 20% for the 2nd year in a row.

For whatever reason, engaging the police seems to satisfy some people when they want to make some sort of statement. Another was killed in Ohio over the weekend. We know we are the symbol of a civil and orderly society and unfortunately we are then the target of those who want to disrupt that order and civility.  It is usually nothing particularly personal by the killer toward the officer.  They are making their statement.  It is a sad and tragic fact of life.
Let’s do what we can to change this trend in 2011.
